Craftsmanship

We have been building solid wood furniture in Tennessee since the 1940s.  Three generations of artisanship come together to bring your custom-designed BenchMark dining furniture to life, one piece at a time.

BenchMark is built exclusively of Solid Northern Hardwoods.  All BenchMark table tops are crafted of Solid Appalachian Maple, prized for its lustrous and classic grain.  BenchMark chairs and our table and bench bases are built of Solid Beech, an exceptionally strong hardwood traditionally used for seating and where strength is paramount.

We craft our solid wood furniture the old-fashioned way.  All our wood is carefully seasoned to 6-8% moisture content, parts are carefully profiled and hand-sanded before assembly, and all items are assembled with traditional “floating construction”–which allows the solid wood to expand and contract with changes in temperature and humidity without splitting.

We build our chairs to order with mortise and tenon joinery, grooved corner blocks, and double lag screws at each leg to ensure strength and stability.  If you choose an upholstered seat, we use three different densities and thicknesses of foam on a plywood base to give just the right “crown” and support for long, lingering dinners.

If you choose a table with a leaf, we use durable solid-wood table slides, and ship your leaf in a protective felt bag for storage.  On some tables, the leaf can be stored under the table top when not in use.

Our Tennessee family is proud to produce heirloom-quality furniture, and we think you will be proud of your investment in quality and style from BenchMark.
